Ljusdal offers proximity to rivers, forests and outdoor activities all year round – while the town has an active business community and good communications. Ljusdal is the municipality's central town and its business community is characterized by trade, industry and service companies. The town's largest employer outside the public sector is in the service sector, mainly telephone support and call centers.

In central Ljusdal there are many cozy restaurants and cafes. The number of public artworks is also many, with murals in the area around Bagargränd putting Ljusdal on the street art map.
